Every year, our death toll nationally due to drunk drivers arrives at its peak in an otherwise joyous season. The holidays at year’s end often involve revelry, and that may result in more drunk driving, which in turn can cause catastrophic injuries if not death for many innocent victims.

That can be done only if the suspected drunk driver has a drunk driving record; if a victim other than the suspect has died or is expected to die; if a victim other than the suspect endures an injury that needs hospital treatment; or if at least one passenger in any of the accident’s vehicles is under 15 years of age.

Further fighting drunk drivers is the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, a nationwide organization which has chapters throughout Texas. MADD helps drunk driving victims and their families or survivors to cope with grief, but that’s not all. It also supports new laws to combat drunk driving carnage, including a law mandating breath-testing devices in cars to keep a drunk driver from starting the engine.

All such measures can help, but the terrible toll of drunk driving continues. Messages must be sent to drunk drivers that they will be held accountable for their actions – legally and financially. A car accident lawyer or drunk driving lawyer can fight for such justice.
