Cochin, also referred to as Kochi, is a paradise of sandy beaches and waving palm trees. It is within the Indian state of Kerala, which is a narrow strip of coastal territory in the south of India that stretches down the Western Ghats, and reaches up to the Arabian sea.
It is cleaner and quieter than many Indian tourist destinations. In fact, you would be forgiven for mistaking the look and feel of the place for a small, traditional European city. The influence of the British, Dutch and Portuguese, who all ruled there during past centuries, can still be felt in many aspects of life, such as social attitudes, architecture and infrastructure.
It is a religious place, and the local people there have varied ethnic backgrounds. You will find Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Christians living in harmony and celebrating all religious festivals with enthusiasm. All places of worship are present (temples, mosques, churches and even synagogues), and there are some really fantastic examples of them, with colorful and interesting histories.
Cochin’s most famous landmark is a set of Chinese fishing nets at harbor, which is the oldest part of the city. These fishing nets are over a hundred years old, yet they are still in full operation today. Not only can you watch the fishermen work, it is also possible for you to join in and help them should you wish to do so. There are, of course, lots of other worthwhile sights there too, more than enough to occupy you for a week or two.
The coastline that extends from Cochin has some of the best beaches in the whole of India. The coconut lined sands and clear blue sea, make a picture perfect destination to spend to your vacation. The beaches are unspoilt too, as there are typically just a few shacks and restaurants lining the shores, so you can enjoy the surroundings pretty much as nature created them.
As for where to stay, Cochin was one of the first places in India to pioneer the concept of homestays, which provide a much needed source of extra income to the locals, while at the same time giving you a chance to experience the real Cochin. Under this homestay concept, you get to stay at the home of a local family, and will be shown around and looked after by them.
