There are actually 4 different sectors in the full CompTIA A+ syllabus, of which you need to pass two for your A+ qualification. We would advise however that restricting yourself to two of the specialised areas could expose flaws in your knowledge when applying for a job. Try to cover all four – employers will notice the difference.
A+ computer training courses cover diagnostics and fault finding – via hands on and remote access, alongside building and fixing and understanding antistatic conditions.
You might also choose to think about adding the CompTIA Network+ training as it will give you the knowledge to become a networking engineer, and have a more responsible working role.
Don’t listen to the typical salesperson who pushes one particular program without a decent chat so as to understand your abilities plus your level of experience. Always check they have access to a generous stable of training programs so they can solve your training issues.
If you’ve got any work-based experience or base qualifications, you may find that your starting point is not the same as someone new to the industry.
If this is going to be your first crack at IT study then you may want to start out with some basic Microsoft package and Windows skills first.
Adding in the cost of examination fees as an inclusive element of the package price then including an exam guarantee is a popular marketing tool with a number of training colleges. However, let’s consider what’s really going on:
Clearly it isn’t free – you are paying for it – the price has simply been included in the whole thing.
We all want to pass first time. Entering examinations one by one and funding them as you go sees you much better placed to get through first time – you prepare appropriately and are conscious of what you’ve spent.
Doesn’t it make more sense to hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you take the exam, not to pay any mark-up to the college, and to take it closer to home – rather than possibly hours away from your area?
Considerable numbers of questionable training course providers net huge amounts of money through getting paid for exam fees early and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken.
Most companies will require you to sit pre-tests and hold you back from re-takes until you’ve completely proven that you’re likely to pass – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.
VUE and Prometric examinations are currently clocking in at an average of 112 pounds in Britain at the time of writing. Why pay exorbitant fees for ‘exam guarantees’ (often covertly rolled into the cost of the course) – when the best course materials, the right level of support and commitment, effort and practice with quality exam preparation systems are the factors that really get you through.
At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be proper direct-access 24×7 support from expert mentors and instructors. So many companies we come across only provide support to you inside of office hours (typically 9am-6pm) and sometimes a little earlier or later (but not weekends usually).
Don’t accept training that only supports trainees through an out-sourced call-centre message system when it’s outside of usual working hours. Training organisations will defend this with all kinds of excuses. The bottom line is – support is required when it’s required – not at their convenience.
The most successful trainers use multiple support centres across multiple time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to provide a seamless experience, no matter what time you login, there is always help at hand, without any problems or delays.
Don’t ever make the mistake of taking second best where support is concerned. Most students who fall by the wayside, would have had a different experience if they’d got the right support package in the first place.
Trainees looking at this market are usually quite practically-minded, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and struggling through thick study-volumes. If this is putting you off studying, go for more modern interactive training, where everything is presented via full motion video.
Many studies have proved that long term memory is improved when we use all our senses, and we put into practice what we’ve been studying.
Start a study-program in which you’ll get a host of CD and DVD based materials – you’ll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, and be able to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions.
It’s imperative to see courseware examples from the company you’re considering. They have to utilise full motion videos of instructors demonstrating the topic with lab’s to practice the skills in.
Seek out physical media such as CD or DVD ROM’s every time. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with the variability of broadband quality and service.
