Long haul flights are not usually at the top of people’s favorite activities lists, but with some thought and preparation they do not have to make you anxious and can even be enjoyable. For many of us flights are a regular occurance that are necessary for business, travel or seeing family – with experience and planning you will have it down to a fine art.
If you are an anxious flier then make sure you have supplies of something that will relax you. This could be some lavender oil to massage into your temples or something with a bit more kick like valium. Be prepared and you will enjoy flights rather than being on edge all the time.
Avoiding dehydration while on board the aeroplane is an important way to make flights more comfortable. Do this by packing a small tube of moisturizer and using it often. Drink plenty of water and avoid on flight alcohol or coffee, which both dehydrate you. Besides being drunk on a flight is not a nice experience for the drinker or the people that have to sit near you.
One of the best things about international flights is that it is the perfect excuse to engage in a bit of “me time”. Sit back and catch up on some movies, read a great book, get into sudoku or listen to some relaxing music. Even though you are in a confined space there are still plenty of enjoyable activities you can do. Think about what you are going to do on the flight to avoid boredom and make the most of the time.
Sometimes your legs and feet swell when you are on a flight and this is uncomfortable. You can avoid this by strolling around the aeroplane when you can, stretching in your seat and also massaging your limbs. Due to the pressure in the cabin, people often experience sinus problems and dry eyes. You can solve this by taking a nasal spray and eye drops on baord with you.
Many people dislike aeroplane food, but you can request special meals at the time that you book flights. The vegetarian option is quite often nicer than the regular ones given out even if you are not normally vegetarian. Depending on the airline on long haul flights the cabin crew also have little snacks that they can give you if you ask for them.
With some planning and preparation, you can make your long international flights a pleasant experience instead of hours of anxiety and discomfort. It is important that you reduce your hand luggage too to avoid having to carry heavy bags throughout the airport. Tight muscles from dragging luggage around are not a good start or end to any flight.
