Edinburgh – Lonely Planet Travel Video

25 Comments

Lonely Planet author George Dunford sums up Edinburgh. More Europe than Britain probably because of the month-long Edinburgh Arts Festival every August, the city is sophisticated Scotland. Pub culture is the backbone of society, making it easy to meet the locals. Try scotch or hand-made Real Ale but steer clear of football in conversation until you find out which team they go for! Edinburgh is the best city in scotland easily…..august is the best month..finding somewhere to stay if you havent booked is a big problem…one of the worlds best festivals lasts all of august..street theatre..arts festivals…comedy shows with the best the world has to offer for a right good laugh…and real serious pubs with the best beer in the world……the talent is no too bad as well.

    This is not about Edinburgh. It is about the picture postcard, tourist city centre.

    He doesn’t mention that Edinburgh has some of the worst slums in Europe, is full of drug addicts and has one of the highest HIV/Aids rates in Europe. Funny that.

    @TherealMrChristophel Ah you took my words literally. I know just what Edinburgh city is thanks, whether it’s the old town or the new town or even a city with a town feel in parts. I guess I didn’t put my thoughts into words well enough. I’m a regular visitor and live ‘nearby’ so a very lucky person!

    @TimeTravellersGirl it’s not a small town. it’s a city. a big city. it has a cathedral. so therefore it’s a city.

    Funny how foreigners coming here love the place but me having been born in Edinburgh and staying here for 22 years of my life I really hate the place.

    This videos a lie anyway, the weather isn’t as nice as it is in this video, usually snowing or raining.

    @okayplayer82 its certainly compact and very easy to get around on foot (or publui transport if you want to explore a bit further afield). I don’t think there’s a small town that could take your breath away quite like edinburgh, and it is packed to the rafters with visitors, so it doesn’t feel very small town. It doesn’t have the feel of a typical big city either. In fact it’s like no other place you’ve ever seen. You’ll love it!

    @Dunsapie voting a city more friendly than others is a complete nonsense. what’s the criteria, how many people polled, what was the actual question, how was it weighted? It’s people that are friendly not cities. People love to pitch glasgow and edinburgh against each other. they are like chalk and cheese. both have their attractive and seedy sides. for visitors they are both excellent.

    Be warned, Edinburgh has been overrun by Pakis in the past decade.
