One of the most beloved parts of South Africa is the Garden Route. Named the South Western district it is found in the South Western part of the country. Surrounded by large wooded areas and endowed with indigenous plants this part of South Africa is so called because it is similar to a home garden.
The two most popular towns being George and Knysna are a cornucopia of tourist attractions and phenomenal natural beauty. In recent years locals would say that some of that natural spirited beauty has been lost because of the influx of tourists but that is all very subjective. The area still manages to retain its splendor despite the increasing development.
An hour flight to George from Cape Town feels like a few minutes it’s so close. By land the journey is approximately five to six hours by car along the coastal N2 road. If you wanted you could take a journey by sea which would take almost twice as long by car but almost twice as beautiful.
In recent years the region has become very famous for hosting the world’s largest or longest mountain biking event called the Cape Epic. The off road cycling event lasts for five days and takes riders through numerous stages along the garden route region. Another very famous or iconic point in region is that it hosts or is the location of the longest bungee jump in the world on the Storms River Bridge near Knysna.
Beacon Isle is a very popular tourist destination in Plettenberg Bay near George. Besides the natural occurring beauty in the surrounding forests; the area also boasts some of the most delicious beaches in the country ripe for sun bathing, swimming and surfing. A few hours from Knysna is Jeffries Bay which is an international mecca for surfers such as Kelly Slater and Taj Burrows.
In addition to the spectacular vegetation the region also hosts several international game parks where tourists are accommodated and can see the big five. For centuries elephants have roamed the forests freely and at times they have been culled or reintroduced. World renowned and with a waiting list of at least a year the Otter hiking trail is amazing.
