A sectional garage door works great. With an electric garage door opener the door opens by pushing a button that looks like a doorbell. Some day, you will walk out and push that button and the garage door will not open. Your first impulse might be to call a Houston garage door repair company, but the following tips could save you a service call. Try them first, and if they do not work, then call the repair service.
First look to be sure that the door is clear. A tool that has fallen onto the door or its operating mechanism could prevent the door from operating correctly. Boxes or other materials could be stacked so as to prevent the safety sensor from operating correctly shutting off the door opener. Hanging tools can get caught in the door preventing it from opening or closing. Move the tools or whatever is interfering and the door will work normally again.
Look in your circuit breaker box for a circuit that has been tripped. Reset the circuit and your garage door might start working again. The directions for reset should be posted in the circuit breaker box. Be sure that you check the opener for a red reset button. Push that button if you find it.
If your door still is not opening, then you should check to be sure that the garage door bolts are tight. After many years of use, they can vibrate loose and this may cause the door to bind preventing opening. If any nuts or bolts are missing replace them. Loose hinges should be tightened and replaced if necessary. In they need to be repositioned, be sure that you center them over the joint.
Bolts that hold the door in place should be tight at both the door frame and the ceiling. Replace any missing bolts.
Check and lubricate the pulleys. Use household oil or a special garage door lubricant to lubricate pulleys.
Be sure that you check each of the rollers. The metal shaft should move in the hinges freely. The lower rollers are subject to moisture and grime, so they are more likely to rust. They should also be lubricated with garage door lubricant or graphite powder. Open and close the door manually to check for binding rollers. Replace any rollers that are not freed by lubricating.
After trying all of the above procedures, if you still have difficulty with the garage doors, call for help. Garage door spring replacement and adjustment is best left to the professionals as it can be very dangerous. Repair companies can let you know if the spring needs tightening or replacement.
