Indigenous lawyer tells of fight for Amazon land – 11 Dec 08

Indigenous leaders in Brazil are claiming a victory against farmers in an Amazon region who they say are occupying their lands. A majority of Brazil’s supreme court judges say they’ll support the claim for a reservation in Roraima state to remain in the hands of indigenous people. But the decision isn’t yet final, and a ruling isn’t expected until next year. Indigenous leaders say they hope the ruling will set a precendent protecting the rights of their people. The lawyer representing the indigenous people in that case is Joenia Batista de Carvalho. An indigenous person herself, she has overcome long odds to present the case in front of Brazil’s highest court. Al Jazeera spent some time with Joenia as she arrived in the capital Brasilia ahead of the Supreme Court ruling. This is her story, in her own words.

It not the UN thats the problem – Its logging, oil companies, land grabs, white-mans diseases in the Amazon. The simple truth is that indigenous peoples (including in Australia) are second class citizens historically. South American countries are poor and so their governments are often complicit in this – i.e. Ecuador most recently with Texaco drilling for oil on the protected Yasuni national park, home to the Huarani people.

The question is not the worth of the rain forest. Thats a clear thing. The primary question is: How come, that people who call themself democratic and righteous can steal a country from their inhabitants without consequences from the world community? The Answer is simple: All members of the world community did the same thing. The UN is a platform form thieves, slavemasters and criminals. And there is no other big organisation. Its a monopoly. A legal platform for villains.

im not indigenous but i have to say we all need to fight to save the amazon, besides it being home to the indigenous we need those trees to breath, and its a very high percentage of the worlds oxygen is produced by the amazon so as more awareness is reported to the world the better chance we have of saving the Amazon and our mother earth!!!!

Indigenous People of the Earth’s original instructions are to enjoy and to protect all of Creation. To compare this point to the Farmer’s that has squatted on these people’s lands for 50 years is unquestionable. The Farmer’s managed to create jobs and fatten their bank accounts all in the name of development. In doing so they did this on other people’s land. What are the roots of this way of life, I ask?

Wow that’s great! An Indigenous woman protecting her peoples’ rights to the land. A land filled with many stories that go back since time of Creation. To the Brazilian farmers – where are your stories of the land that you claim to be yours?

Native Indians are a group that is still marginalized in all of Latin America….we must support their fight for equality and retainment of their land…..The Brasilian government won’t do anything to protect them unless the mass population suppport their cause…SO LETS SHOW CONCERN AND SUPPORT THEM!!
