Kenya Safari Travel: Must See Attractions in Nairobi

Nairobi is one city in East Africa that has become unique in the sense that business as well as leisure travel exist symbiotically. The city is well prepared to meet the needs of the different visitors that come to this place. Some of the attractions that one can enjoy in this city include visiting Museums, restaurants as well as a game park which is in the city itself!

Nairobi National park is located 7 kilometers from the City Centre of Nairobi. The park boasts of being the only park in the world that borders a city. The park is ideal for those folks who want to go on a game drive but do not want the hassle of traveling to long distances. The park covers an area of about 117km2 and is blessed with numerous wild animals. We have the David Sheldrick trust which cares for orphaned animals and was founded by Mervyn Cowie in 1946. Here one is able to see diverse bird life as well as aquatic species

For daring visitors, Nairobi Snake Park is the place to go. Dangerous vipers enclosed slither lazily behind the thick glassed enclosures, sure to raise the adrenaline of timid visitors. The park is popular with local and international tourists, researchers and students. On display are cobras, adders, mambas and an African Rock Python indigenous to Kenya. Crocodiles and American Alligators are also available plus coral fishes in the aquarium. The snake park has been bringing chills to visitors since 1961.

Nairobi Museum, established in 1910 is another major attraction within Nairobi. The museum serves both the scientific as well as tourists and it keeps important historical monuments for Kenya. The museum also houses a botanical garden as well as a snake park.

The railway museum has records of the perilous history involved in construction of the Kenyan railway network. The records account for two lions (man eaters of Tsavo) that had ravenous appetite for railway construction workers in early 1900s and their eventual demise. The tragic events inspired a ‘lunatic express’ folklore. The 1900s rickety steam locomotives exhibited are occasionally resurrected to offer tour crossing along the Kenyan Country side. The museum is a truly historical gem.

One of the most famous landmarks in Nairobi is the Kenyatta International Conference Center. The center has a very unique architecture which makes it an iconic landmark similar to the Taj-Mahal in India or the Eiffel Tower in France. Within its confines we have the gigantic statue of the founding father of the country where you can take photographs.

A must visit attraction in Nairobi would be the Carnivore Restaurant which at one time was voted as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world by the UK Restaurant Magazine. There are various succulent meats to chose from which are cut from skewers and placed directly onto your hot plate. Here you eat to your heart contentment washing the meat down with fine drinks. This makes this restaurant to be dubbed as “Africa’s Greatest Eating Experience”. International music artists like Kirk Franklin have entertained people here.

For those would want to buy curios and love African art, the African Heritage located at the Carnivore would be an ideal destination. For those that want to know the history of Kenya, the Kenya National Archives would be the ideal place to tour.
