An example of a horse breed that was part of history is the Spanish Mustang and the common name for this horse is the colonial Spanish horse. This breed originated from the horses introduced from Spain in the first conquest of South and North America. In our day, this horse is nearing extinction in Spain. People have now domesticated the Spanish Mustang greatly and it is common to find people confusing it with the American Mustang.
The American Mustang descended from Spanish and feral horses. Feral horses are the horses that escaped from some protected habitats in western United States and began living in the wild. During the late nineteenth century, the introduction of thoroughbreds and Arabians occurred by Morgans.
The horses that gave rise to the Spanish Mustang were the horses introduced into the Caribbean from the Iberian Peninsula in the initial three decades of the new world conquest. For that reason, these horses are the direct descendants of the Spanish horses that comes from Hispaniola, Cuba and other neighboring islands. This happened during the Spanish colonization of New Spain, which we call Mexico today.
They should not be confused with the horses prevalent in Spain during its Golden Age because that breed is nearing extinction in Spain and is not bred or preserved. From the 16th century onwards Mexico was conquered and the horses moved north by crossing the Rio Grande. The following century saw these horses being stolen and sold by the Native Indians tribes from this region to the tribes residing in the Rocky Mountains as well as the Great Plains.
Since people regarded the horse as being too small for farming, they sought ways of replacing it with heavier and lager horses. They introduced many breeds to act as crossbreeds that produced horses which were stronger and heavier.
This happened by way of the introduction of thoroughbreds and Morgans into the wild breeds. In 1959 in order to preserve remaining populations of the Spanish Mustang, two brothers established the Spanish Mustang Registry Inc.
Using two full brothers as the foundation stallions and genuine mares they began crossbreeding. However one of the horses actually escaped with its mares in 1944 and was never captured again. The Spanish Mustang can be used in various fields. It is a very versatile breed and can be used for Polo, showing, driving, jumping or possibly dressage.
Some kinds of Spanish Mustangs are helpful for ranch work and as stock horses in performances. Some of these horses served the purpose of being cavalry mounts for the U.S.A Army throughout their battles with the Apache Indians. These horses managed the barren terrain well displaying that they were ideal for battle.
The Spanish Mustang horses are of various colors such as brown, black, bay and chestnut. Other colors consist of grullo, cremello and buckskin. These horses are beautiful and they have these colors on their base and patches or white hair on their tops. These hairs and patches create various colors such as gray, pure white, paint and the dark spots that have similarity with those found on the Appaloosa breed.
