Understanding the work that needs to be done will help you in knowing that the work is being done right. You can't cut corners when restoring your windows or you might find yourself having the job done incorrectly and having to do the work twice. In an older home settling can effect the operation of your windows which would require carpentry skills to repair. Years of paint could make windows stick and lead paint removal would require a specialist.
The steps to this type of work involve getting the sash out which involves prying the front molding stops off and pulling out the lower sash. Remove the cords and use them to measure new ones. Then remove the molding strip on the upper sash and remove it. Pull off the hardware.
Scrape out the old putty, clean well with a wire brush and remove the glazer's points. Now you can remove the glass. Check the integrity of the wood and thoroughly remove all dry rot wood and apply epoxy to rebuild damaged areas. Prime the sash after waiting a day for the epoxy to cure and it has been sanded.
Apply hand rolled glazing compound into the exterior groove of the sash and press the glass into it about 1/16th of an inch from the bottom pane opening. Insert glazier's points about every 12 inches or evenly spaced if it's a smaller window, pushing into the wood to hold the glass in.
One more roll of glazing compound to complete the job around the outer edges of the window and glass finished off by beveling it with a putty knife for a clean look. Curing will take about a week after which a coast of oil-based primer and a coast of acrylic seal the job.
Replacing old molding and weatherstripping with new assures a more efficient window and less labor is involved in having to strip the old molding. The pulleys should be sprayed with silicone or Teflon and reattached to the upper and lower sashes along with the weigh being replaced.
