Apr 15
The melting pot London is houses many nationalities and international companies. This variety creates a gigantic foundation for inspiration for young students. Famous companies within the fashion, film, design and architecture industries are located in London. The presence of these industries has led to a huge demand for skilled work force – which again has led to new colleges and institutions specialized to meet the demand from the industry.
For students within creative arts London booms of inspirations. The culture of London includes arts, music, museums, festivals and other entertainment. London is home to notable cultural attractions such as the British Museum, the Tate Galleries, the National Gallery, the Notting Hill Carnival and The O2. Galleries holds exhibitions and shows on a weekly basis, and major exhibitions like the London Fashion Week – which attracts the best fashion designers of the world, are held every year. London is home to over 240 museums, galleries, and other institutions, many which have free admission.
More important to the students are the number of student arranged events; London is the place where most of the students competitions and shows are held. The Graduate Fashion Week – follows the London Fashion week and is a place where students will get to exhibit their work. This is probably the best place for students to get in contact with the industry and show their own design. In the world of digital design, London also hosts the PROMAX award – the biggest competition for Motion Graphics. There are also other big student award shows like the D&AD for graphic design and illustrations and Freerange for Interior design.
The London Design Festival, established in 2003, is the biggest event. This is an annual event to celebrate and promote London as the creative capital of the world and gateway to the UK’s world class creative industries. The event acts as a platform for a huge and diverse range of partner organizations from across the design community to stage the UK’s biggest yearly design event. The LDF has approximately 150 venues across London with different design focus.
As mentioned these gigantic industries have created a number of very successful institutions in higher education; such as Central St. Martins, Royal College of Art, London College of Fashion and Ravensbourne. Ravensbourne taking the education a step further and has become the most successful creative college over the last decade.
The schools all offer Bachelors and masters programs within different subjects. Common for the schools are that they use industry professionals as teachers in their programs, which make the learning process more realistic and industry focused. Small colleges as Ravensbourne can easily turn around and changed their courses to meet the industry demand. If you want to study in London I suggest you take some time to visit London and the schools to see if they can give you exactly what you want.
