The game of poker is one that is becoming ever more popular around the world as the years go by. With the rise of the internet it is being played more and more and comes in many different forms. In this article I am briefly going to describe how a hand is played in the game of texas holdem. Here are some tips on how to play poker in this way.
When it comes to playing no limit holdem there can be as little as two people playing heads up or thousands playing in a single tournament over hundreds of different tables. On a single table you are not going to get more than ten players and the game will start when the players are all ready to go. One card will be dealt in order to find the highest card. The highest card will be then put as the ‘button’ for the first hand and this represents the position of the dealer from where the cards are dealt.
When the button is chosen then the player to their next will put in the small blind and the player to their left will put in the big blind. These blinds are small amounts of money or chips that are needed in order to stimulate play. After this the cards will be dealt out from the left of the button to each of the players around the table, with each one of them getting two ‘hole cards’ that only they are allowed to see.
So the cards will be dealt from the bottom or dealers position, with the small blind receiving the first card and then each player clockwise receiving the next. Two cards will be dealt out in this fashion until each player has both cards which are not to be shown to anyone.
The player to make the first bet after these cards are dealt will be the next player to the left of the blinds. The first bet needs to be at least as big as the big blind or the player will need to fold the cards. However, they are able to raise the bet to anything above double the value of the big blind. They can even go ‘all in’ with all of their chips.
Once that player has bet the betting will continue clockwise until everyone has either called, raised or re-raised. The players who are left will see the flop. This will be three cards face up in the middle of the table. After the flop the person that is remaining in the hand who is closest to the left of the button will then have their chance to bet again. They can also ‘check’ which means that no bet is placed.
The next round of betting will ensue and then another card – the turn – will be placed next to the flop. The process is done again before ‘the river’ is dealt, making five cards on the table. A final round of betting will be done with each player offering the best hand that they can make using the best five cards that they have out of the five on the table and the two in the hand that the other players cannot see.
And this is, very briefly, how a hand is played out in texas holdem.
