Garage doors come in several different types and you can choose from roller doors, doors that go up and over, doors that come in sections and side hung doors. Most types of garage doors will provide functionality and security for your garage. You can find each one of these doors in most neighborhoods although some are older models than others.
Roller doors are great for those that have little space to spare in their garage. When you want the door to open the door rolls up around a drum that is situated right above the opening of the door. This type of door is one that is almost always used with an automatic garage door opener. The lock is inside the garage in a recess so it is very hard to break in to a door of this type. Roller doors are almost always made of very narrow aluminum strips that allow it to roll into the drum.
The up and over garage door type swings out then goes up to lie under the ceiling. This type of door is an older style and it needs to have lots of room to be able to function right. It needs all the ceiling space of a garage but then needs room to swing out as well. People that have a short driveway should look for another type of garage door. Also be aware that if you park another car in front of the door you run the risk of hitting it when you open the door.
Garage doors that are made in several sections are another type of popular door. There can be about 3 sections that collapse and unfold as the door opens up. Here the door is also found up on the ceiling when it is open. Sectional doors do not swing and take a lot of ground room. When you pull them up they go up straight then they go back. The sections permit the door movement in a small space. When you take that drive in your neighborhood you will probably find this type of door most prevalent. They can also be hooked up to an automatic garage door opener.
The swing hinge door is an older type of door. There are usually two doors that open from the middle. They both swing out to each side of the garage. You do not see many of these anymore but they do make them new if you want them. You cannot park another car near these doors or you will never get them open so make sure you have a bit of room to work with.
You can get garage doors in a variety of materials. If you prefer wood be sure you are able to lift this door or make sure to get a heavy duty garage door opener because they are very heavy. If you wish to go a little lighter try the fiberglass or vinyl doors. The lightest is the aluminum door and they are still very secure. If you want great security you may want to see about a steel door. There are doors that have glass windows and those that have no windows at all. Wood is the most expensive door with steel coming in second. Aluminum is the lease expensive and you will find most people do have aluminum garage doors.
The first consideration that must be addressed when purchasing a new garage door is how it looks. You want it to be compatible with the way your house looks. Do you want to scrap and paint a wooden door or would you rather have a door that doesn’t need as much maintenance? Can you lift a heavy door or would you be better off with a lighter door. With all the different types of garage doors the perfect door is out there just waiting to be chosen.
